TransPort Overview:
For us unfortunate few without hard disks, using a ramdisk can save
considerable time over floppy disks alone, but transferring files
into the ramdisk each time you boot up a disk can be a real
aggravation. This can be especially apparent in the case of
programmers who must load the editor, linker, compiler, header files,
program file, and so on into the ramdisk each time they boot the the
disk.
TransPort aliviates this aggravation by doing the work for
you. Now the programmer can simply use the TransPort Selector
to create a list of files to transfer, and each time he boots
the disk the files will automatically be moved into the ramdisk!
Installing TransPort
The Transferring Program TPORT.PRG should be placed into the AUTO
folder of the disk containing the ramdisk. It is important that
TPORT.PRG be placed into the ramdisk after the ramdisk program is
ALREADY in the AUTO folder. The ST system executes files in the
AUTO folder in the order thet THEY WERE PLACED INTO THE FOLDER, and
not the alphabetical order. TransPort will not work If the ramdisk
is not already in place when the ST runs the program.
Do not trust the directory listings in the file selector
windows as to the order in which the files were placed into the
folder, as the system ignores this in the listing.
(Transport can also be booted from the desktop by double clicking
on the TPORT.PRG icon.)
Then either transfer the ASELEC files onto the new disk,
or run them from another disk, and place the new disk into the
drive. Using the TransPort Selector, create the TPORT.TXT file
onto the new disk.
When these steps are completed, turn off the computer, and
reboot. The files selected will be listed to the screen as they
are transferred. If an error occurs, TransPort will list which
files were unable to be transferred.
TransPort will return control to the system after completing
its task.
TransPort was designed to be used with any ramdisk system.
I use the ETERNAL Ramdisk. If you don't have this Ramdisk
system-Get it! It's reset survivable, and it is public domain.
Pressing the reset button will cause TransPort to replace any of
the List files that were removed from the ramdisk. Files that were
changed and exist under the same name will not be re-written.
Pressing the CONTROL key during the booting of the program will cause
TransPort not to transfer any files. If you are booting the disk
from the start, and don't want TransPort to run, you must hold the
CONTROL key down until you see the TransPort title appear.
TRANSPORT SELECTOR PROGRAM
To run the TransPort Selector program, the TSELEC.RSC file
must be on the disk. Double click on TSELEC.PRG to run it.
Place the disk in which you want the TPORT.LST file to be placed
into the drive.
OPTIONS:
To select an option, position the mouse pointer over the
box to the right of the choice and click to cause the box to
be chosen. To cause the option to execute, click over the box
marked DO IT!, or choose another option. Clicking on LEAVE
terminates the program.
VIEW files:
This option prints the current list of files to the screen.
NEW files:
Use this option to create a listing file.
Upon choosing NEW you will be prompted for the Ramdisk
identifier. Tye in the drive letter for the Ramdisk (ex. G)
A file selector menu will then appear.
Choose the first file you would like to be transferred by
either double clicking on the file, or by single clicking
on the file, and then clicking on the OK box.
Continue selecting files in this fashion until your
list is complete. Press Cancel to return to the Selector
program. Viewing the files is a good idea to make sure
that they have all been placed into the Listing file.
IMPORTANT: Choosing a file will erase all files
previously contained in the Listing file before loading.
to add new files, see the ADD option.
DELETE files:
This option allows you to delete one or more of the files
in the file listing file. After selecting DELETE, the
current listing of files in the listing will appear on
the screen. You will be prompted as to which file you
would like to delete. Type in the number next to the
file.
The listing will remain, but the number of the delete
file will have stars through it. You may continue
choosing files to delete, or end the delete session
by choosing a number that is not in the file range.
'0' is usually best.
ADD files
Where NEW creates a new Listing file, ADD simply adds new
selections to the existing Listing file. Select files to
add as you did with the NEW file, and press CANCEL to return
to the Selector program.
LEAVE
Exits the Selector program, and returns the user to the
system.
BUGS:
TransPort only works on files in drive A:\ currently.
The file selector seems to enter never-never land if
you attempt to choose any other drive. This should
be fixed in version 1.1.
To create 2nd level directory files, the first level
directory must first be present. For example, to transfer
A:\FROG\TOAD\TADPOLE.PRG...you must first have transported
a file from the FROG direstory. (A:\FROG\WART.H maybe).
Right now, the program is set to load up to 30 files.
If people seem to need more files, I can change that
easily. Write me, and I'll send you an update for the
price of a disk, or send a disk to be updated for free.
Notes:
ALL TransPort programs and files are public domain and can be
given freely to friends/associates. No charge should ever
accompany the transfer of any of these files.
The programmer assumes no responsibility for any loss that
occurs due to any use/misuse of this program.
